I am a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre and Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Aston Medical School. I graduated from the University of Alexandria, Egypt then moved to the United Kingdom where I completed my basic residency ophthalmology training in South Wales and Lincolnshire, which is where I gained a great deal of experience in general ophthalmology. I had my higher training in ophthalmology in West Midlands. Following this I have finished two sought after surgical glaucoma fellowships at Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) and the international prestigious renowned one in Moorfields Eye Hospital.
I am the director of glaucoma services at BMEC which is the supra regional centre for ophthalmology referrals. I accept referrals from my colleagues for managing complex glaucoma and cataract conditions with specialist interest in angle closure, neovascular glaucoma following diabetes or vascular occlusion. I manage ocular surface disease patients especially secondary to eye drops. I have performed several thousand cataract operations with great success, and I am vastly experienced in glaucoma filtration surgery including augmented trabeculectomy and aqueous tube shunts. I have performed many minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) and other surgical cataract procedures. I offer glaucoma laser surgery including selective laser trabeculoplasty SLT, YAG and cyclodiode lasers.
I am interested in teaching and I have published in peer reviewed scientific journals and contributed to a chapter in the Ophthalmology handbook textbook. I have presented in many national and international conferences including the American Academy of Ophthalmology. I am regularly invited to speak and moderate educational sessions and I have organised a major glaucoma day with international speakers in association with ARVO. I also teach at Aston medical school.
I have mentored and trained more than 15 national and international glaucoma fellows in using modern day techniques while they are in BMEC.
I have co-founded the Global Education & Research Society of Ophthalmology (GERSO) which is a worldwide initiative for free eye education for all ophthalmologists in a new platform.
As a visiting glaucoma consultant to the Watany Eye Hospital in Cairo, Egypt one of the major eye hospitals in the Middle east, I provide glaucoma surgical services for very complex cases form Middle East.
My aim is to provide the best standards of care to my patients while they are attending for glaucoma, cataract consultation and surgery by involving the patients in their care in an informed manner. The patients should receive the most up to date suitable treatment for their conditions.
